Keri has no idea who she really is anymore. Raised in the Midwest, where catching frogs and shovelling manure is common practice, then spending several adult years traveling the country and hob-nobbing with celebrities and the elite, Keri returns to her roots. She now lives in her sister`s basement, wondering just who she really is anymore. After a peculiar meeting with the Quinn cousins, Keith and Jeremy, Keri is determined to capture Keith`s attention. An actor, a tall, compelling man, elusive, even abrasive at times, Keith is particularly intriguing to a woman like Keri who is accustomed to capturing the heart of any man she`s ever wanted. Yet it was Jeremy, the humble cabinet-maker and owner of a misshapen dog named Scalawag, who leaped into a bon-fire to rescue a scrap of an old coat that had sentimental value for her. Following two episodes with the facial disorder, Bell`s Palsy, and after Jeremy has moved out of state, possibly to run from his heartbreak over her, Keri finally realizes not only who she really is??but who she needs to become. But is it too late?

Sometimes I think authors somehow find a way to reach into the recesses of my mind and write about it! That is exactly how I felt about this book...the characters were so real and relatable, I almost felt like I knew them personally and half expected to have a conversation with one or more of them! Kari (the main character) is deftly written and could be virtually any single woman in her 30's and looking for love - while trying to figure out where she fits in life; all the while overlooking (literally) the best life had to offer. All of the characters in this book were superbly developed, artfully cast in their rolls and masterfully woven together. One thing I appreciate about Ms. Lapekes' writing is how down to earth it is - it's like watching in the minds eye a piece of real life - that is if we slow down enough to see it happen. This book has some good comical elements as well as some more serious topics that were handled in a very skillful manner.
If I had paid $10 instead of $1 for this book, it would have been worth it! Great job Lori!

For a Short Time edition by Lori Lapekes Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I really enjoyed this book. I went to high school with the author and was a friend of hers. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was a wonderful read that kept me reading continuously til I finished!
I admit, I am not a fan of "romance" novels, however, this is not your ordinary romance story. This is more of a love story with characters that are very well developed, with a bit of quirkiness that makes them very real and seem like someone you might actually know. I don't believe I've read another book of this genre (does it really even have a genre?) as it included a bit of suspense, romance, good character study and just enough "oddball-ness" to make it fun. The author has a great way with words and bringing her stories to life. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel and have given it as a gift to many friends.
WOW, I really enjoyed this book. Romantic but in a different way than most "romance" novels. Had me tearing up on occasion. Great characters. Absolutely loved Jeremy. This is a novel about growing up and realizing what a relation should truly be about and not the trivial stuff. Great read.
When I read this book, it took me back to an old farm house that I spent a lot of time at in my childhood. I had a crazy friend just like Keri; she had quite the imagination and was a character herself. This book is more than just a romance, it has REAL people that you actually know and can relate to, with real problems you may have experienced yourself. I highly recommend this book and can't wait for her next one.
I really enjoyed this book as it was my first read from this author. The book drew me in and I had to read it every spare minute I had. I thought that it was going to be predictable but was I ever wrong! I could not have guessed what happened to the characters as I read the last few chapters. This is a must read..it has drama, makes you laugh and get teary eyed all at the same time!!
I have known Lori Lapekes, the author for over 20 years. We dated way back at the end of the 1980's "for a short time" to quote the title. She was writing then. Many different types of stories. All of them in my humble opinion are very good, and worthy of being published. She truly has a unique gift of creating worlds, characters, scenarios from bits and pieces of our reality, her influences, places she's been, small quirky excerpts from people she has known in her life. Lori actually pens her novels by hand....I can only imagine how many pens she has gone through. I knew she would be published one day, it took some time. It is an excellent book. Keri is like someone we've all known, or parts of the character, in our life times. I being a guy, am not much into "romances" but this isn't your typical "Romance" it's very well crafted, and the book draws you into the world Lori created, the characters are well rounded and very "real" in the metaphorical sense. Of course my opinions are somewhat biased, but I highly recommend this book if you love a good read. The book is a life journey that all of us at some point in our lives, can relate to on some level. Congratulations again Lori. Keep plugging away, your other drafts will see the light of a publisher!
I'm not a fan of this genre. So I was skeptical when a friend suggested I read For a Short Time.
Turns out this novel is truly entertaining. Keri, the protagonist, is known as a "man eater," yet, perhaps implausibly, she has genuine empathy for her victims. Some of the scenes, such as one of the trips to L.A., are truly moving.
Predictably, this story involves a choice between two lovers. The problems in Keri's love life, however, are complicated by her inability to reconcile the persona she projects to the outside world with her actual personality. The story never drags, and I had trouble setting this book down.
If I have one quibble, it is that the author does not do enough with the story's setting, i.e., West Michigan. I can only hope that her next book more fully integrates the unique landscape and culture of this region into her narrative.
I heartily recommend this novel to everyone, even to skeptics like me.
