Lawyer Claire Dunning used to be able to see the tip of Manhattan from the window of her high-rise office. But after her married employer’s financial fraud is discovered—along with their secret affair—she moves from New York to a small town in North Carolina to start over, taking a job defending inmates condemned to death row.

Her first client, Grace, is a woman sentenced to death for the murder of her two-year-old daughter. After several years behind bars, Grace’s sanity is in question, and her story has been muddled by time, too much medication, and the brutal effects of isolation. Still, Claire tries to uncover the obscured details of the child’s tragic death and prove her client’s innocence—all while attempting to forget her own complicated past. Though try as she might, Claire cannot help but ask Once the damage is done, is the question of guilt or innocence still relevant?

A Trial for Grace Single edition by Jessica Pishko Literature Fiction eBooks

This was a very absorbing novella about a young attorney, Claire, whom we get to know through dual story lines. At first, it seems the story will revolve around whether Claire will be able to get her client, Grace, off a murder rap for killing her own daughter. Instead, Pishko reveals Claire's backstory in her former professional life, working for a high-rolling financial firm that is busted by the feds, and her romance with the head of the firm.

Claire's decisions are often morally dubious, and the painful repercussions lead her to a very different professional direction, representing prisoners accused of capital crimes and without other means of defense. As the reader learns more about both Grace and Claire, it becomes easier to find sympathy for both.

This is not a typical legal thriller. The mystery is not so much on what will happen to Grace, but in exploring such evergreen issues as the complexities of human behavior and motivations, and the power of faith to both heal or, in some cases, corrupt.

I look forward to Pishko's next work!

A Trial for Grace Single edition by Jessica Pishko Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This story is less about Grace than it is about this lawyer's own personal affairs and shortcomings. But it works. I didn't want to put this down, not even to go to work. I'm looking forward to reading whatever this author writes next, no matter what it's called.
It never really seemed to resolve anything. Just a story of a lawyer and her life with a bit of a case thrown in. Not what I expected. Short read though.
Characters was internally conflicted with an interesting travel through several events. Could have been a bit more depth developed but overall an enjoyable read
The book kind of left me wanting more, more character development, more intertwined connections with the characters. It was a quick read and mildly entertaining.
This was a good, poignant book. Grace is on death row for the death of her baby. The reader is in suspense as to how Grace's baby died. This Single was well written, suspenseful, I enjoyed reading it - wondering if Grace would finally be able to say what really happened to her baby.

I will look for more books by this author.
A Trial for Grace is a short, quick read but kept my attention throughout. The narrator, Claire, is an attorney who finds herself in a small town in North Carolina working for a small clinic defending death penalty inmates. Clair is assigned to try to get defendant Grace, who is on death row for murdering her young daughter, an appeal. The story moves through Grace's story with twists and turns as Claire and the clinic's investigator meet her family and the mysteries of the backwoods resident's distorted beliefs and actions.
Full disclosure I was in a writing workshop with the author and provided feedback on a very early version of this story. That said, I am so impressed with how Pishko developed the short story I first read. The finished work has so much more complexity and emotion...and that's starting with what I thought was a very strong story.

The easy label for this novella might be "legal thriller," however the moment I say that I feel uneasy, like I'm not doing this work justice. It starts in the legal mode, but quickly becomes much more personal. Soon religious and even supernatural elements enter the picture. That may sound ridiculous, but the author makes it work. At the center of the story is the problematic character of Claire, so flawed, yet searching for redemption. Pishko has taken the classic trope of the flawed investigator, a staple of film noir and detective fiction, and given it a new spin that brings in the South, the Iraq War, the 2008 financial collapse, race in America, parenthood, and more.

There are a few points where the language is a little hackneyed and warranted one more editor's review, however the plot surprises and the emotional depth this novella conveys more than makes up for those technical concerns. A moving story that goes deeper and deeper into two women's lives, with a surprisingly cathartic ending.
