As far as short stories go, this was a real winner from Ken Fry. Right from the start it was off and running. The style was almost staccato - quick point followed by quick point, not a style I'd seen used by Fry before. I don't want spoilers, but rest assured, as with most short stories, there will be a nice twist at the end. A quick, satisfying read from an Author who's novels I've come to admire very much. Good job!

Is that you Jim? edition by Ken Fry Eeva Lancaster Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is an ideal lunch break read.
As a master in word crafting and plot setting, not one sentence is redundant in this story. The skillful choice of words alludes the characters’ backgrounds, personalities, and disturbances fully in this short story. The ending is gripping and thrilling.
It is a superb short story in this category.
There's a certain kind of story from a certain era that begins with the most matter-of-fact description of its matter-of-fact protagonist (and the protagonist in these stories is always a "he"), thereafter proceeding through his matter-of-fact life before it perambulates into something less matter-of-fact. I associate this genre with Sinclair Lewis, though I do so with the broadest of strokes, since I've read only a little of Lewis, and that a long time ago. Nonetheless, this story detailing the life and livelihood of Jim Beresford strikes me as that sort of tale, and while I wouldn't put it in the same class as a literary titan like Sinclair Lewis, the influence, mood, and feel should be familiar to people who know.

I say all of this because "Is That You, Jim?" is a short enough story that any real summation is likely to spoil its effect. Author Ken Fry paints the shape and scenery of Beresford's existence with quick, pragmatic efficiency, carries us along through Jim's trials and triumphs, and edges us steadily toward a resolution with the ever-building promise of things turning out not quite as one would expect.

If this encapsulation appeals to you, give the story a shot. It's not your everyday piece of fiction.
This was a quick read with an unexpected ending. The story cruises along on an even road and then suddenly, the thrill begins. It's unexpected and then when the last words were reach, I had to stop and think about what had just happened. A good read.
This short story is too short. The only person we really know about is Jim. We only know the bare minimum about his wife. As soon as the tension begins to build, there's a climax and wham!, like slamming into a brick wall the story ends. Really? This is where the story, the psychological thriller begins. What we have is just a sad little story that could have been much more.
